Getting resume advice from your friends - Sterling Career Concepts

Getting resume advice from your friends Getting resume advice from your friends As the song says “We get by with a little help from our friends.” It’s normal to want to get a second or third opinion on your resume from friends or family members, but please tread cautiously on how seriously you take everyones advice. While it includes some certainties, in many other ways, resume writing is more of an art form than an exact science. If you sent your draft to five friends, you may get five very different opinions back. Here are three suggestions to keep in mind when reaching out to your friends • Review the opinions and suggestions as a whole and look for trends or consistencies in their comments. Please do not try to make everyone happy. The subjective nature of resume writing can make that nearly impossible. • Take into account your friends’ professional experience with resumes i.e., is he or she a recruiter or a hiring manager? Have they recently been in a job search themselves? If not, take their comments with a grain of salt. Well-meaning advice from the closest of friends and family members on a topic such as resume writing can sometimes do more harm than good. If someone hasn’t been in the employment marketplace over the past several years, they will not be “in the know” on current resume styles, preferences, and formatting. This is one more reason why it’s smart to work with a certified resume writer who stays current on industry trends and best practices.
